About the role
The Nigeria High Commission is seeking a Social Secretary to join our team in a full-time capacity at our office located in Yarralumla ACT 2600. This is a key position within our administrative and diplomatic operations, providing essential support to the High Commissioner and senior staff in coordinating and managing official social functions, events and engagements. The Social Secretary will play a vital role in maintaining the High Commission's profile and fostering diplomatic relationships through the organisation and execution of high-level social events and official functions.
Key responsibilities
Organising and coordinating official social events, receptions and diplomatic functions hosted by the Nigeria High Commission
Managing event logistics including venue selection, catering arrangements, guest list management and invitations
Liaising with government officials, dignitaries and other stakeholders to arrange official engagements and functions
Preparing briefing documents and event schedules for the High Commissioner and senior diplomatic staff
Maintaining detailed records and correspondence related to social events and official functions
Coordinating with external service providers including caterers, florists and event management companies
Managing event budgets and ensuring financial records are accurately maintained
Providing administrative support to the High Commissioner's office on a daily basis
Maintaining confidentiality regarding sensitive diplomatic matters and official functions
Supporting the coordination of cultural and promotional events that represent Nigeria
What we're looking for
Proven experience in event coordination, administration or diplomatic settings, preferably within a government or high-level organisational environment
Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and event management software
Knowledge of protocol and diplomatic etiquette
Ability to work independently and exercise discretion with confidential information
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with senior staff, government officials and external partners
Attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality work
Flexibility and ability to work outside standard office hours when required for events
A professional appearance and demeanour appropriate for diplomatic settings
Experience in hospitality or event management is highly desirable
