Lead Communications Engineer (Networking) – Canberra, ACT

About the RoleWe are seeking a skilled and motivated lead engineer with strong networking expertise to join our growing technical team in Canberra. This is an exciting opportunity to work with cutting-edge satellite communications technologies, supporting the design, deployment, maintenance, and optimisation of critical communications infrastructure across gov and defence industries.The successful candidate will combine hands-on satellite communications experience with a solid understanding of IP networking principles and technologies.
Key ResponsibilitiesDesign, configure, commission, and maintain satellite communication systems and associated infrastructure.Support VSAT, LEO, MEO, and GEO satellite networks and services.Configure and troubleshoot network equipment including routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless technologies.Perform fault diagnosis and root cause analysis across SATCOM and IP network environments.Monitor network performance and implement improvements to maximise reliability and availability.Collaborate with customers, vendors, and internal stakeholders to deliver technical solutions.Produce technical documentation, reports, and operational procedures.Participate in on-call support and occasional site travel as required.
Skills & ExperienceEssentialExperience working with satellite communications systems (VSAT, satellite ground systems, or related technologies).Strong knowledge of TCP/IP networking, routing, switching, VLANs, VPNs, and network troubleshooting.Experience configuring enterprise networking equipment from vendors such as Cisco, Juniper, Fortinet, or similar.Understanding of network monitoring and diagnostic tools.Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.Australian working rights.
DesirableIndustry certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, JNCIA, Network+, or equivalent.Project management experienceExperience supporting remote or mission-critical communications environments.Knowledge of SD-WAN, cloud networking, and cybersecurity principles.Experience in mining, defence, maritime, energy, or telecommunications sectors.
