Postdoctoral Fellow – Mathematics & Statistics

This position is based in Sydney, NSW, Australia.

Location: Sydney, NSW – the School of Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW.

Work type: Full time, 35 hours per week. Level B – salary between $127,000 and $150,000 per annum plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading. Fixed term 3 years.

Role: Support the Australian Research Council funded Discovery Project Fixing the holes in Bayesian model comparison. Develop new fundamental theory in Bayesian model comparison and create fast, scalable methods for its implementation, building on computational statistics and machine learning techniques.

Responsibilities
  • Engage in independent and/or collaborative research in Bayesian inference and computation consistent with disciplinary practice.
  • Create scholarly impact by publishing research papers in high quality statistics and machine learning journals and conference proceedings and by releasing supporting open‑source software.
  • Conduct research under limited supervision, attend and present in seminars and conferences, and organize research events.
  • Establish a personal research portfolio and begin developing independent research proposals.
  • Contribute to competitive funding applications under senior guidance where appropriate.
  • Mentor students and colleagues; supervise HDRs and other research students as required.
  • Teach appropriate courses in statistics and data science, if opportunities arise and subject to agreement.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university, ensuring the safety of self and others.
Qualifications and Experience
  • A PhD in Bayesian statistics and computation.
  • Research experience in Bayesian statistical theory; Bayesian model comparison; Monte Carlo algorithms for posterior simulation (e.g., MCMC, SMC); variational inference; transdimensional algorithms; generalised Bayesian inference.
  • Demonstrated commitment to staying up‑to‑date with disciplinary knowledge and developments.
  • Track record of high‑quality, high‑impact research publications and evidence of research excellence and leadership.
  • Significant involvement with the profession.
  • High‑level communication skills and ability to network and interact with a diverse range of students and staff.
  • Collaborative teamwork, cross‑disciplinary collaboration, and effective relationship building.
  • Strong interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • Commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values, and knowledge of relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to relevant training.
